Mobile VPN – How to Get the Most Out of the Internet While on the Go

Mobile VPN

Since 2013, as much as one-quarter of global internet users have used a VPN to surf the web each month. You don’t have to be an internet technology expert to realize that this is a huge number of people who are simply dissatisfied with their regular internet connection for one reason or another.

On the other hand, statistics show that there are more and more people who use their mobile devices to access the internet. As a matter of fact, in 2018, 52.2% of all internet traffic was generated through mobile devices.

In addition, in a survey conducted by the Ponemon Institute, over 70% of participants indicated that failing to secure company data on mobile devices was likely to result in a data breach.

With both these statistics in mind, there is an obvious need for a method that can enhance mobile security for both business and personal use. In addition, there are a number of other concerns faced by mobile users on a daily basis, such as connection stability, privacy, and anonymity.

Luckily, there is one solution that can successfully tackle all these issues – a mobile VPN.

What is a mobile VPN and how does it work?

In a regular VPN connection, the user’s endpoint is fixed to a single IP address. Therefore, it cannot survive motion because the tunnel breaks and application sessions easily disconnect. As a result, the user needs to restart the communication from scratch.

Mobile VPNs were developed to address this exact issue – to maintain a stable connection and enhance privacy for users roaming across different Wi-Fi hotspots or data networks from cellular carriers.

In a mobile VPN, a VPN server is still at the edge of your network, but the tunnels are not tied to physical IP addresses. Instead, each network tunnel is assigned to a virtual (logical) IP address that sticks with the user’s device.

The Host Identity Protocol (HIP) separates the IP address’ function for host identification from its locator functionality in an IP network. This way, when a mobile host is switching between networks, logical connections are established through the host identifier and easily maintained.

Benefits of a mobile VPN

Whether you use your mobile phone to access social media, your bank account, or business data, your sensitive information will be at risk if you are browsing from an open network. That is why you should seriously consider installing a VPN service on your smartphone or tablet.

Below are listed the main benefits of using a mobile VPN.

Enhanced security

If you use a public Wi-Fi network to connect to the web, exchange data, sync your emails, or access social media accounts or company data, your sensitive information is at substantial risk of getting intercepted.

The reason for this is very simple – this type of connection is not encrypted at all, so you practically give your data to hackers and other online frauds on a silver platter.

A mobile VPN saves the day by encrypting your data and sending it through a secure tunnel, so there is no reason to worry about your online security anymore.

Improved mobility

If you need to urgently reply to a business email, send confidential information, or access corporate private files, doing it from your mobile device through an unencrypted connection is not the best idea.

In order to keep your business communication confidential, you may have to wait until you come home or arrive at your office and use a secure VPN connection.

However, if you use a VPN on an Android smartphone or iPhone, you can do both things easily and safely, without any potential leaks. Therefore, if you want to be able to complete important business tasks while on the go, you should use your VPN connection wherever you roam.

Stable connection

In case you need more bandwidth for uninterrupted business calls or live video streaming, a mobile VPN is your best pick.

By allowing seamless subnet roaming and multiple internet connections at once, it gives you increased bandwidth and lower latency. In other words, you will experience less or no buffering for video streaming and your business calls will no longer suffer from disconnections.

Unlock restricted content

As you already know, quite a few websites like Facebook, YouTube, Netflix, and even Google are inaccessible in certain parts of the world. Whether they are blocked by a country’s government or by the website/app itself, you probably want to find a way to access the content effortlessly and regardless of the reason for it being blocked.

Enter mobile VPN.

This advanced technology helps you connect from your mobile device to a server which is located within the area where the content is not blocked. Wherever you live, a mobile VPN is a highly effective solution for accessing your favorite content while in motion.

Online anonymity

In addition to blocking certain websites, governments of some countries have declared using a VPN illegal. This means that if a person is caught using a virtual private network to access the internet, they will have to pay a fee.

Fortunately, a mobile VPN does not only let you access the restricted content, but it also provides you with a cloak of anonymity.

How to set up a mobile VPN

Setting up a mobile VPN on a mobile device is not complicated. However, before you start, make sure that you get all the important information from your mobile VPN provider. These include the server information, remote ID, username, and password.

Once you have all this information, you can start setting up your mobile VPN.

How to set up a mobile VPN on an iPhone or iPad

There are two options for setting up a mobile VPN on iOS devices – manually and through an app.

To do it manually, follow these steps:

  1. Open Settings on your Home Screen.
  2. Go to General VPN.
  3. Select Add VPN Configuration.
  4. Go to Type and select your VPN type (IPSec, IKEv2, or L2TP).
  5. Tap Add Configuration in the upper left corner to return to the previous screen.
  6. Enter your VPN settings information (description, server, and remote ID).
  7. Type in your authentication login (username/certificate and password).
  8. If you want to enable a proxy, tap Manual or Auto.
  9. Tap Done and under VPN Configurations, toggle the Status switch on.
  10. When done using the mobile VPN, go to Settings VPN to turn it off or switch it back on later.

If your mobile VPN provider has developed a mobile app, you need to download it from the App Store and install it on your iOS device. Once you have signed in, tap Allow to configure the VPN automatically.

Then, you will need to enter your passcode or Touch ID to give permission to change your VPN settings. Once your VPN is enabled, you will be able to select it and connect it whenever you want without opening the app again.

  1. Open Settings on your Home Screen.
  2. Go to General VPN.
  3. In case you have more than one VPN, select the VPN client you want to use.
  4. Toggle the Status switch on.

How to set up a mobile VPN on Android

Similar to iOS devices, setting up a mobile VPN on an Android smartphone or tablet can be done manually or through an app.

To set it up manually, use the following steps:

  • Open Settings on your Home Screen.
  • Under the Wireless & Networks, tap More VPN.
  • Choose VPN and tap the + sign in the top-right corner.
  • Select your desired protocol and enter the information acquired from your VPN provider.
  • Tap Save.
  • To connect, go back to the VPN settings and select your VPN of choice.
  • Enter the username and password.
  • If you want your VPN to be always on, click the 3-dot menu.

However, keep in mind that not all Android devices are the same, so your settings may be slightly different.

On the other hand, if you are connecting to a VPN through an Android app, download your provider’s app from Google Play, open the app, and follow the instructions.
